Brechin RFC are a club small in number but big in heart and passion about our sport. #smallbutmighty has become our tag line. For the first time in the club’s history, since securing a long term lease from Angus Council on a disused playing field on the outskirts of the town, we have a home to call our own. The club have spent the last 3 years literally growing our own club! It started with one of our dad’s ploughing and seeding the playing field and from there we have grown the facilities to what they are today.
Brechin RFC have established a pitch and training area with secure fencing. Bought temporary buildings for a club office, changing facilities and storage. Installed power to the site and floodlights on the pitch, bringing a new floodlit grass pitch to our local community. Our plans to install water to the site have unfortunately been impacted by the virus, but we are working hard to resolve this as soon as we can. It has taken a great deal of effort from all involved, but we are all immensely proud of what we have achieved together as a club, with the support of Angus Leader Programme to name but one of our supporters. A club like so many others in our sport which is run entirely by volunteers.
Year of Anniversaries
Brechin RFC had great plans for a year of celebrating anniversaries in 2020. Our junior membership celebrating 25 years since starting, and our Veterans celebrating 10 years since that fateful trip to watch Scotland v Australia at BT Murrayfield!
Sadly, like so many other events this year, the fun and festivities are now postponed until 2021. With a membership from 2 years to over 90 years old. Our core groups are our junior section up to Primary 7, and our over 35s Team, the Brechin BRUCE who terrorise the local veterans’ circuit!
Last year for the Royal Bank RugbyForce Day we were selected as one of the top clubs in Scotland. As part of this award, we received a player visit from current Scotland 7s Player Ross McCann, and our new Regional Director Steve Turnbull (a former Edinburgh Rugby Player) and Coach Development Officer Scott Riddell, himself newly retired as Scotland’s most capped 7s player. This was a very exciting day for all at the club, a huge honour to have such well known and respected guests. Despite the awful weather on the day, we had a great time getting to know each other better.
New Ambassadors
It was from this that over the summer we had a plea for help from a very familiar face. Former Edinburgh Rugby player and current Scotland 7S player Tom Brown. After speaking to Scott about looking for a safe space to maintain his fitness during the restrictions at the time, he was put in touch with the club and we were able to support his request with pleasure.
Both Tom and Ross have very kindly agreed to become ambassadors for Brechin RFC. Tom taking time out of his busy schedule to introduce himself to the Junior members of the club last weekend. He answered their questions, no matter how random! It’s great to have him join us to help promote what we are trying to achieve at the club and endorse the quality of the work we have put in so far.
